O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. She was able to advance to the top ten spots because of the judges' enthusiasm in her performances. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and second lowest. The judges were shocked by this, and told the audience that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil has been consistently giving stellar performances ever since, has never fell below the three top performers. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it into the final two of the contest. Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
